CAMIMEX has joined Shrimp Welfare Project’s Humane Slaughter Initiative, marking a historic milestone as the programme is now estimated to impact about 4 billion shrimps per year in total.

Shrimp Welfare Project is granting an electrical stunner to CAMIMEX, a leading Vietnamese producer, who has committed to use humane slaughter technology to render shrimps unconscious during harvest.

Seafood Connection, a Netherlands-based supplier, has also joined the agreement by committing to prioritise the purchase of stunned shrimps from CAMIMEX.

Shrimp Welfare Project’s Humane Slaughter Initiative provides electrical stunners to aquaculture operations free-of-charge to help the industry transition to higher welfare.

This partnership is the programme’s 21st memorandum of understanding (MOU):

  • Once all 21 stunners are delivered and operational, the Humane Slaughter Initiative will be improving the lives of about 4 billion shrimps annually.

  • Since the industry measures shrimps by weight, rather than counting them as individuals, the impact numbers are estimated based on total tonnage.

  • You can read more about the calculations on the (Shr)Impact page on our website.

This is Shrimp Welfare Project’s fourth MOU with Seafood Connection, who has been one of the most supportive partners of the Humane Slaughter Initiative, previously signing MOUs with Nha Trang Seafoods in Vietnam, Taprobane Seafoods in Sri Lanka, and Mega Marine Pride in Indonesia.

“Reaching the milestone of 4 billion shrimps annually is a collective achievement that highlights the power of partnership across the global industry,” said Krzysztof Wojtas, Shrimp Welfare Project’s Chief Programmes Officer. “Thanks to CAMIMEX and Seafood Connection, we are not only scaling our impact but also setting the stage for even more innovation in the field of humane slaughter, ensuring that welfare becomes a standard practice across the supply chain.”
