Mega Marine Pride has joined Shrimp Welfare Project’s Humane Slaughter Initiative, marking a historic milestone for ethical and sustainable aquaculture in Indonesia.

Mega Marine Pride, a leading Indonesian producer, has committed to use an electrical stunner during the harvest process for its entire supply of shrimps.

Shrimp Welfare Project is granting an Optimar shrimp stunner to Mega Marine Pride, helping ensure that animals are treated more humanely by rendering them unconscious during harvest.

Seafood Connection, a Netherlands-based supplier, has also joined the agreement by committing to prioritise the purchase of stunned shrimps from Mega Marine Pride.

The collaboration is part of the Humane Slaughter Initiative:

  • Shrimp Welfare Project provides electrical stunners to aquaculture operations free-of-charge to help the industry transition to higher welfare.

  • This partnership is the programme’s 19th memorandum of understanding (MoU), and the first in Indonesia.

  • Indonesia is the world’s fourth-largest exporter of shrimps, behind Ecuador, India, and Vietnam.

This is Shrimp Welfare Project’s third MoU with Seafood Connection, who has been one of the most supportive partners of the Humane Slaughter Initiative, previously signing MoUs with Nha Trang Seafoods in Vietnam and Taprobane Seafoods in Sri Lanka.

“Forward-thinking companies like Mega Marine Pride and Seafood Connection are at the cutting edge of sustainable aquaculture by joining Shrimp Welfare Project’s Humane Slaughter Initiative,” said Krzysztof Wojtas, Shrimp Welfare Project’s Chief Programmes Officer. “Electrical stunning helps animals experience minimal stress and pain during harvest, and Shrimp Welfare Project is excited to deliver a stunner to Indonesia thanks to Mega Marine Pride leading the way.”

“The reason for this partnership is because we want to keep updating our work to the community and we realized the importance of animal welfare,” said Yosef Ezra, Marketing Manager of Mega Marine Pride. “We have received recommendations about how Shrimp Welfare Project has been operating and we support their program.”

“At Seafood Connection, we believe that high welfare standards are the future of seafood,” said Jozua Koffeman, CSR Officer, Seafood Connection. “By prioritizing stunned shrimp, we are raising the bar for ethical sourcing and inviting our partners to join us in building a more sustainable and humane supply chain.”
