Sandhya Aqua has joined Shrimp Welfare Project’s Humane Slaughter Initiative in a partnership that is expected to improve the lives of millions of shrimps annually.

Sandhya Aqua, a leading shrimp producer in India, has committed to use an electrical stunner – granted by Shrimp Welfare Project – to humanely render animals unconscious during harvest.

The collaboration is part of the Humane Slaughter Initiative:

  • Shrimp Welfare Project provides electrical stunners to aquaculture operations free-of-charge to help the industry transition to higher welfare.

  • This partnership is the programme’s 20th memorandum of understanding (MOU), and the third in India.

  • India is the world’s second-largest exporter of shrimps.

“As more companies commit to higher welfare practices, we are seeing a real shift in how shrimps are farmed and harvested,” said Krzysztof Wojtas, Shrimp Welfare Project’s Chief Programmes Officer. “Providing access to electrical stunning technology ensures that animals experience less stress and suffering, and we are proud to support Sandhya Aqua as part of this transition.”
