December 1, 2025 – To improve the welfare of millions of farmed shrimps for years to come, Shrimp Welfare Project has partnered with C.P. Viet Nam and Westbridge Food Group.
Shrimp Welfare Project is granting an electrical stunner to C.P. Group Viet Nam – part of CPF, one of the world’s top shrimp producers – to help render shrimps unconscious during the harvesting process.
C.P. Viet Nam has committed to stun 100% of L. Vannamei shrimps harvested for the UK market from January 1, 2026.
As part of the collaboration, Westbridge Food Group – an international supplier to major supermarket chains – has also agreed to prioritize the purchase of stunned shrimps from C.P. Viet Nam.
The partnership advances ethical and sustainable practices in global shrimp farming:
Consumers all over the world are increasingly demanding higher-welfare standards for animal products.
Electrical stunning technology reduces suffering, ensuring that shrimps are treated more humanely throughout the production cycle.
C.P. Viet Nam also committed to adopt best practices in water quality management and disease control, reinforcing their dedication to responsible aquaculture.
Shrimp Welfare Project provides electrical stunners to aquaculture operations free-of-charge to help the industry transition to higher welfare. As of December 2025, the program has signed 26 memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with corporate partners, and once all 26 stunners are delivered and operational, the programme will be improving the lives of about 4.5 billion shrimps annually.
“As the shrimp industry embraces higher welfare practices, Shrimp Welfare Project is proud to provide electrical stunners so we can help producers, suppliers, and retailers ensure that animals in their supply chains experienced minimal stress and pain during harvest,” said Krzysztof Wojtas, Shrimp Welfare Project’s Chief Programmes Officer. “By partnering with forward-thinking companies like C.P. Viet Nam and Westbridge Food Group, Shrimp Welfare Project is helping bring more ethically farmed shrimps to consumers worldwide. Together, we are raising the bar by prioritizing health and well-being in shrimp production.”
"At Westbridge Foods, we’re committed to sourcing responsibly and driving progress across our global supply chains,” said Carl Cooper, Responsible Sourcing Manager at Westbridge Foods. “Partnering with C.P. Viet Nam and Shrimp Welfare Project marks an important step forward in improving welfare standards in aquaculture. This is part of our wider commitment to ensuring sustainability and animal welfare progress for the benefit of our retail partners and consumers.”
