Iceland (the UK supermarket chain – not the Nordic nation!) has pledged to roll out pre-slaughter electrical stunning and go eyestalk ablation-free across 100% of its own-label prawn lines by 2027!

Iceland (yes, still the UK supermarket 😉) is the 9th European retailer to commit to humane slaughter and banning eyestalk ablation. By switching to higher-welfare practices, these trailblazing companies are improving the lives of billions of shrimps every year.

🦐 Shrimp Welfare Project is proud to support producers, suppliers and retailers like Iceland by offering free shrimp stunners, personalized consulting, and technical support to help turn corporate commitments into real-world solutions.

🌴 Bali briefing: at The Center for Responsible Seafood (TCRS) Shrimp Summit in June, our India team – including Sri Rang K and Satvik Kalapala – put shrimp welfare centre-stage. They traded notes with diverse, global producers, buyers, and scientists on everything from non-ablation breeding to humane electrical stunning. 

We were excited to see the shrimp welfare session covered by The Fish Site, Aquafeed, and the University of Stirling’s Sustainable Aquaculture blog.

Amid tariff woes and tech demos, the takeaway was crystal-clear: higher-welfare, sustainable aquaculture is gaining traction in the industry. Shrimp Welfare Project is ready to help hit the mark!
