Another UK retail giant raises the bar for humane shrimp farming: Co-op has ended the practice of eyestalk ablation in its supply chains and will adopt electrical stunning for all farmed shrimps 2027. 

The announcement – covered by a dozen news outlets including the Financial Times, Responsible Seafood Advocate, and Grocery Gazette – positions Co-op alongside Tesco, Sainsbury’s, M&S, Ocado, and Waitrose in a fast-growing coalition of supermarkets proving that sustainable aquaculture and commercial success can go hand in hand.

At Shrimp Welfare Project, we’re excited to see this momentum and eager to support retailers and suppliers with the practical know-how to implement electrical stunning and other higher-welfare practices that are reshaping the global seafood landscape.
