Introducing Shrimp Welfare Project

Greetings from Shrimp Welfare Project,

Thank you for subscribing to our newsletter. We'll generally keep things brief and send an email once every few months, to keep you in the loop regarding our progress as well as potential opportunities to help the shrimps!

In our first newsletter, we want to highlight our recently published EA Forum post, which gives an overview of why we decided to focus on shrimps, our scope of work, recent progress and upcoming plans.

We're also excited to announce that in December we’ll be working remotely with our partner organization in India, who will interview farmers and take water quality measurements to determine our baseline.

In addition to this being our first newsletter, we have also published our first EA Forum post.

In it, we make a case for focusing on shrimps, give an overview of our intervention, outline our progress so far and lay out our plans for the future.

We've been attending a few conferences in the past few weeks and are excited to attend more in future as part of our Outreach work.

EAG - London - From 29th-31st October, Aaron attended the Effective Altruism Global conference in London.

The Aquatic Life Conference - On November 17th, Andrés was at the 2nd Aquatic Life Conference, joined by Daniela Waldhorn and Jennifer Jacquet on a panel discussing Neglected Species - Shrimp and Octopus. You can watch their session here.

Animal Advocacy Conference Asia - On November 28th, Andrés introduced Shrimp Welfare Project at AACA. You can watch the session here.

In 2020, the UK Government commissioned an independent research team to investigate whether animals like crabs, lobsters & prawns (decapod crustaceans) and cephalopod molluscs (such as octopus and squid) are sentient.

On Friday 19th November, their report was published, confirming that both cephalopods and decapods are sentient.

Following publication, the UK Government confirmed that the scope of the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill will be extended to all decapod crustaceans and cephalopod mollusks.
