Greetings and Happy belated New Year from Shrimp Welfare Project!

We’re starting 2025 with a new collaboration aimed at advancing shrimp welfare worldwide. We've partnered with CrustaWohl, a leading research initiative by the Alfred-Wegener-Institute, to develop a robust animal welfare evaluation system for shrimp farming.

Additionally, our partnership with Ace Aquatec has brought the A-HSU® portable stunning system to Sea Farms in Thailand. This innovative technology offers a more humane, efficient solution by stunning shrimps in under a second, and designed to withstand robust biosecurity measures and protocols to process at a rate up to eight tonnes of shrimps (or 580,000 shrimps) per hour.

We’re proud to announce a new collaboration with CrustaWohl, a research initiative by the Alfred-Wegener-Institute. CrustaWohl’s innovative research investigates critical husbandry practices—like water quality, stocking densities, and handling procedures—using advanced methodologies like video analysis, AI behavior monitoring, and genomic studies. By extracting sensitive parameters to evaluate chronic stress, CrustaWohl is developing a robust animal welfare evaluation system that can be seamlessly integrated into recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). The CrustaWohl project is bridging the gap between research and practice, empowering producers with tools to minimise stress, improve welfare, and enhance shrimp farming sustainability.

We're excited to announce that Sea Farms, a shrimp farm based in Thailand, has become the first to install Ace Aquatec's innovative portable in-water stunning system, A-HSU®, through a partnership with SWP! The system is now being trialled for use at pond sites, marking a significant step in advancing humane slaughter practices for shrimps.

This cutting-edge technology offers shrimp producers a more humane, efficient, and sustainable solution by stunning shrimps in less than a second. This in turn reduces handling stress while simultaneously improving welfare. Compact and transportable, the system is designed with input from the shrimp farming industry, and is capable of processing up to eight tonnes per hour. 

Sea Farms is currently making the necessary changes to begin full-scale trials, both at the factory and farm level, paving the way for the wider adoption of humane harvesting practices.
